The intention of this paper is to analyze the letters from Capistrano de Abreu to Barão do Rio Branco in the years between 1886 and 1903. The focus will be given to the divergences around the notion of territorial formation, a basic concept for these authors who were thinking about the construction of a historical narrative at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Later, the question is the construction of the craft of the historian in the letters of Capistrano de Abreu and his distinction and proximity to the ideas of the Barão do Rio Branco

THE POSTMODERN TURN IN PROSUMING IMAGES: JUXTAPOSITION, DIALOGISM, AND THE SUPPLEMENT IN CONTEMPORARY VISUAL CULTURE

This paper aims to problematize the very place of prosuming images (TAPSCOTT; WILLIAMS, 2007), that is, images simultaneously produced and consumed, within the perspectives of the postmodern and the visual turns in contemporary society. Of qualitative/interpretative nature, itdiscusses and connects such turns to the philosophical concepts of dialogism (BAKHTIN, 1981), cultural translation (MIGNOLO; SCHIWY, 2002; MENEZES DE SOUZA, 2004; HALL, 1997), supplements (DERRIDA, 1978), and visual culture (ROGOFF, 2002; HALL, 1997) by means of interpretations of photographic images from social media (Instagram, Facebook) and free images from websites. The article is divided into 5 sections: after the introduction in which questions of language, representation and visual meaning making are briefly discussed, the second part explores the dialogic nature of language that seeks to juxtapose visual narratives. The third part focuses on the Postmodern and the Visual turns, and suggests that concepts of cultural translation and supplementation are paramount in visual studies. In the fourth section, visual culture – intertwined with cultural translation - is analyzed through the concepts of supplements and ruptures. To conclude, this paper advocates for more critical ways of understanding the so-called crisis of representation in (post) modern society

To contribute to mass balanced trophic model parametrization, estimates of annual food consumption/biomass ratio (Q/B) were compiled for 37 selected fish species of the Curuçá Estuary in Northern Brazil using an empirical model. Samples were taken bimonthly between July 2003 and July 2004 in the main channel and intertidal creeks using an otter trawl and a fyke net, respectively. The aspect ratio of the caudal fin varied between 0.8 for Poecilia vivipara and 4.6 for Sciades herzbergii and the Q/B ranged from 2.3 for Epinephelus itajara to 67.3 for Cetengraulis edentulus. This study represents the first reference available on Q/B values of 29 fish species. This compilation of Q/B ratio presented here should be useful for construction of Ecopath models particularly in tropical conditions. Keywords: consumption/biomass; aspect ratio; trophic models; Ecopath

A Customer complaint from a telecommunication company: a Bayesian data analysis

Get PDF
This study considers a customer complaint dataset due to the technical services provided by a telecommunications company collected for 134 consecutive weeks from the first week of January 2018 up to the year 2019. The total count of weekly complaints is the sum of different causes, which characterizes compositional data. The data was analyzed assuming a Poisson regression model for the weekly total complaint count data in presence of a random factor and compositional models both under a Bayesian approach using existing MCMC (Monte Carlo Markov Chain) to get the posterior summaries of interest. The obtained results are of great importance to improve the service quality of the company

In-season internal and external training load quantification of an elite European soccer team

Elite soccer teams that participate in European competitions need to have players in the best physical and psychological status possible to play matches. As a consequence of congestive schedule, controlling the training load (TL) and thus the level of effort and fatigue of players to reach higher performances during the matches is therefore critical. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to provide the first report of seasonal internal and external training load that included Hooper Index (HI) scores in elite soccer players during an in-season period. Nineteen elite soccer players were sampled, using global position system to collect total distance, high-speed distance (HSD) and average speed (AvS). It was also collected session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) and HI scores during the daily training sessions throughout the 2015-2016 in-season period. Data were analysed across ten mesocycles (M: 1 to 10) and collected according to the number of days prior to a one-match week. Total daily distance covered was higher at the start (M1 and M3) compared to the final mesocycle (M10) of the season. M1 (5589m) reached a greater distance than M5 (4473m) (ES = 9.33 [12.70, 5.95]) and M10 (4545m) (ES = 9.84 [13.39, 6.29]). M3 (5691m) reached a greater distance than M5 (ES = 9.07 [12.36, 5.78]), M7 (ES = 6.13 [8.48, 3.79]) and M10 (ES = 9.37 [12.76, 5.98]). High-speed running distance was greater in M1 (227m), than M5 (92m) (ES = 27.95 [37.68, 18.22]) and M10 (138m) (ES = 8.46 [11.55, 5.37]). Interestingly, the s-RPE response was higher in M1 (331au) in comparison to the last mesocycle (M10, 239au). HI showed minor variations across mesocycles and in days prior to the match. Every day prior to a match, all internal and external TL variables expressed significant lower values to other days prior to a match (p<0.01). In general, there were no differences between player positions. Conclusions: Our results reveal that despite the existence of some significant differences between mesocycles, there were minor changes across the in-season period for the internal and external TL variables used. Furthermore, it was observed that MD-1 presented a reduction of external TL (regardless of mesocycle) while internal TL variables did not have the same record during in-season match-day-minus.: The authors state that there were no salaries’ fund from a tobacco company. A new species, new synonymy, and notes on Paravelia Breddin (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Veliidae)

Get PDF
The broad-shouldered water strider Paravelia cunhai sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on material from the state of Pará, northern Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all other species in this genus mainly by the dark color of the head and pronotum, absence of pruinosity or silvery pubescence on the anterior lobe of pronotum, maculae pattern on the fore wings, hind femur with row of 22 spines on mesal margin, and general shape of the paramere. This new species was collected in a pool inside a cave without incident light, a habitat recorded for the genus only recently, which reinforces the hypothesis that some species of Paravelia have troglophilic habits. In addition, a photograph of the dorsal habitus and notes concerning P. juruana Polhemus & Polhemus are provided, and P. cupariana Polhemus & Polhemus syn. nov. is proposed as a junior synonym of P. spinifera Polhemus & Polhemus
